EIMP has published its Position Paper on “Maximising the potential of AI while ensuring fair competition in media”, outlining how Artificial Intelligence can serve as a transformative tool for independent media publishers while safeguarding editorial integrity, intellectual property, and media pluralism.
AI is reshaping how content is created, distributed, and consumed. For small and independent publishers, it presents both new opportunities and new challenges. The Position Paper stresses that AI must complement, not replace, human creativity and editorial responsibility. It highlights how AI can improve newsroom productivity, support multilingual communication, and strengthen the competitiveness of European media businesses, provided that its use remains transparent and responsibly managed.
In the paper, EIMP calls for a balanced regulatory environment that promotes responsible AI use without stifling innovation. It underscores the need for fair competition, global competitiveness, and protection of fundamental rights such as press freedom and intellectual property. EIMP also urges policymakers to involve independent and small publishers in shaping AI and copyright policies to ensure that future frameworks reflect the realities and needs of Europe’s diverse media ecosystem.
EIMP remains committed to constructive dialogue with EU institutions, technology partners, and stakeholders to ensure that AI strengthens, rather than undermines, independent journalism and media pluralism. By embracing responsible innovation, Europe can lead in building a fair, transparent, and future-proof media environment.
